Endurance

Endurance Mountain Bike Races are mass start races that involve riding a mountain bike for a longer distance or time than normal. This can be anywhere from 30 miles, all the way up to 100 miles for the toughest events. An Endurance Mountain Bike Race Course will consist of a mix of climbing, descending and flatter singletrack. Endurance Mountain Bike Races normally consist of one larger single lap, but sometimes races can take place over a number of mid-distance laps, for example, three 10 mile laps for a total of 30 miles.

Cross-Country (XCO)

Cross-Country Mountain Bike Races are also mass start races, where riders complete laps on a singletrack trail. This is more spectator friendly, as you get to see the participants multiple times. A typically XCO course will usually consist of some climbing, descending and flatter singletrack sections. Lap length will vary from race to race, but 5 to 10 miles per lap is fairly common. Each race will have a set number of laps and first across the line wins. The number of laps you complete will depend on your age and experience. Top elite riders will do the most laps, normally six to eight, with the total race duration being around 90 minutes. Beginner, or younger riders will do fewer laps, with races lasting anywhere from 30 to 80 minutes.

Short-Track (XCC)

Short-Track Mountain Bike Races are also mass start races, but riders complete a high number of laps on a very short, less technical loop, with each race lasting only 30-45 minutes. This is truly perfect for spectators, or any family and friends you have coming along to watch, because they get to see the riders roughly every 5-10 minutes. Most XCC races in the St Louis Area are on Thursday Nights in the Spring and Summer, and brings out mountain bikers of all ages and skill levels.
